2023 NFL redraft: Top QBs swap places as Day 3 steals — plus a UDFA — crash a wildly different Round 1

Three years later, the biggest storyline from the 2023 NFL Draft still starts at the top: What if the Carolina Panthers selected C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans landed Bryce Young?

In this re-draft, that’s exactly what happens — in part because of the arbitrary rules of this exercise (see below) and because Stroud’s early-career brilliance might still make him the safer choice at No. 1 overall. However, Young’s steady development over the past year or so makes the Texans’ side of the equation far more fascinating than it would’ve seemed 24 months ago.

The shakeup at the top is just the

Welcome to the Monday edition of the Pick Six newsletter!

It’s Memorial Day, and although most people are out of the office, I’m in the office, because this newsletter isn’t going to write itself. And to be honest, that’s probably for the best, because if it did write itself, I’d be out of a job. There’s probably an AI joke in there somewhere, but I’m too lazy to make it.

As always, here’s your reminder to tell your friends to sign up for the newsletter. It makes the perfect graduation gift and that’s mostly because it’s free. Alright, let’s get to the rundown.

AFC East win totals: Take the Over on Josh Allen and the Bills in 2026

After a change at head coach and an offseason spending spree, the New England Patriots found a way to go from 13 losses to the Super Bowl. Quarterback Drake Maye took a major step forward in Year 2 and finished as the MVP runner-up, while Mike Vrabel won NFL Coach of the Year. However, there’s no getting around the fact that New England played the easiest schedule in the NFL, and faced a backup QB in the conference championship game. The Patriots are expected to lose more than three games in 2026, but how many more?

The Buffalo Bills again came

Jaxson Dart was sacked by one of his own teammates after the New York Giants quarterback took part in President Donald Trump’s campaign-style rally for Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York on Friday.

Dart, who introduced Trump on stage, was called out afterward by Giants pass rusher Abdul Carter, who like Dart was selected by the Giants in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft

“Thought this (expletive) was AI,” Carter wrote on X while alluding to Dart’s introductory speech. “What we doing, man?”

Carter’s response quickly led to speculation about potential issues within the Giants’ locker room. New York

In the weeks leading up to the release of the 2026 NFL schedule, debate raged about who the Seattle Seahawks would kick off the season against in Week 1.

The NFL traditionally assigns the reigning Super Bowl champion to host the first game of the following season. With the game in Seattle, the Seahawks were going to face one of the nine opponents on their 2026 home schedule: The Rams, Cardinals, 49ers, Cowboys, Giants, Bears, Chiefs, Chargers or Patriots

With the Rams and 49ers playing in Australia in Week 1, those two teams were out.

The NFL usually tries to start the season with a big

Malik Nabers’ return uncertain: Should Giants be worried about Jaxson Dart’s supporting cast?

The New York Giants are a trendy pick to be a lot better in 2026 than they were in 2025. Everybody liked the hiring of John Harbaugh to replace the departed Brian Daboll. Everybody agrees that they had a strong first round of the draft by taking Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa in the top 10. There are high hopes for the defense under Dennard Wilson despite the departure of Dexter Lawrence. And the offense has Jaxson Dart heading into Year 2 after a pretty successful rookie campaign.

The recent reporting surrounding the health status of Dart’s No. 1 receiver, though,

Matthew Stafford’s back injury was so bad that Rams almost QB placed on IR to start 2025 season

Matthew Stafford had one of the best years of his career in 2025, but that almost didn’t happen, because the Los Angeles Rams came close to placing him on injured reserve to start the season.

The 2025 season started with Stafford missing the first month of training camp due to a back injury. Rams coach Sean McVay has now revealed just how bad things got during that period. Los Angeles gave some serious thought to placing Stafford on IR, which would have knocked him out for at least the first four games of the season, McVay said during an interview on the

Five NFL contenders with easiest paths to playoffs: Lions, Ravens poised to return to postseason

In a perfect world, every NFL team would play the same caliber of schedule and thus face a level playing field on the road to the postseason. The scheduling model does not work that way. Take last year’s New England Patriots, for instance. They held the worst strength of schedule in the league, according to FPI. It is no coincidence they made a Super Bowl run.

That is an extreme example, but a little scheduling luck can help push a talented roster over the hump and maximize its potential. Then there is the flip side. Sometimes the strongest teams face the toughest

The New York Giants kept their front office intact amid a coaching change earlier this offseason, and now they are locking it in for the long term. General manager Joe Schoen signed a multi-year extension with the team, the Giants announced Thursday, to retain the position he has held since 2022.

While the Giants remain in search of their first playoff appearance since Schoen’s debut season, they enter 2026 with momentum and clearly want to give Schoen a chance to see things through with the promising players he added over the last couple of years.

The extension, however, figures to draw mixed
