Cal defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon is leaving to become the linebackers coach of the New Orleans Saints, sources told ESPN.

Sirmon has spent the last seven years at Cal, including the last five as the defensive coordinator. He’s a former NFL linebacker with the Tennessee Titans from 2000-06, and this opportunity marks his first chance to coach in the NFL.

Ohio State is finalizing a deal to make veteran NFL coach Matt Patricia the school’s new defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN.

The move to bring in Patricia comes with the corresponding internal promotion of secondary coach Tim Walton to the co-defensive coordinator role, per ESPN sources. Ohio State will also be promoting safeties coach Matt Guerrieri to pass-game coordinator, per sources.

Patricia comes to Ohio State to replace Jim Knowles, who left for Penn State‘s defensive coordinator job in the wake of the Buckeyes’ 2024 national title.

Virginia Tech is on the cusp of hiring a new defensive coordinator, as the school is targeting Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach Sam Siefkes to be the school’s new defensive coordinator. The hire is expected to come together in the near future, per sources.

Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry went outside-the-box for the move, as Siefkes’ expected arrival at Tech will come with significant NFL experience that was attractive to the Hokies’ staff. He just finished his second season as the Cardinals’ linebackers coach and spent two prior seasons in various roles with the Minnesota Vikings.
