After rain halted her match last night down a set to Garbine Muguruza, Elina Svitolina came out a new person today in Toronto. Having to play two matches to get to the Sunday final, the Ukranian cruised past the Wimbledon champion 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Then just a few hours later, she avenged a heartbreaking French Open loss to Simona Halep by handing the defending champion one of her worst career losses in a 6-1, 6-1, destruction.
“In Paris it was very difficult to have that loss, but I think it also was the experience,” she said of her collapse from having a set and 5-1 lead at the French. “So that’s why, from the first point today until the last point, I was very focused and I was just 100% on every ball. I just learned from that experience that you need to play until the last point and just go one point at a time.”
In the final, Svitolina will meet Caroline Wozniacki who earlier in the day reached her 6th final of the season by outdueling Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-3.
Wozniacki played her trademark defensive game which Stephens just couldn’t penetrate enough on a consistent basis.
“She was playing really well, I have to say,” Wozniacki said of the American. “I think she played very powerful, very aggressive, great angles and stuff.
“I think I was moving very well and retrieving and just trying to stay aggressive when I could. But it was a difficult match. I think it was closer than what the score line showed.”
Stephens still enjoyed a very successful event after returning from a foot injury reaching her first Premier final after wins over Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber and Lucie Safarova.
Wozniacki won the Canadian Open in 2010 in Montreal. But the Dane is 0-5 in finals this year while Svitolina is 4-0. And Svitolina leads Wozniacki 2-0 including a win this year in the Dubai final.
